Having teenagers in the house we have found Call Waiting (CW) to be a
valuable option to the normal phone service. Being "kicked off" the modem
"was" a small price to pay for the peace-of-mind CW provided while the kids
are out.

Bell Atlantic (BA) has changed the CW signal from the loud click, which
caused the modem to drop the connection, to two soft low volume tones.
This new signal does not force the modem to drop the connection.

I find it really strange that while;

a) on one hand BA is advertizing their own answering service that will
record a message while one is on the modem, it is disabling the CW feature
that would make the higher cost message service unnecessary.

b) on one hand BA is advertizing extra lines for modems while at the same
time it is disabling the CW feature that would make the extra line
unnecessary.

And also - -

 1) on one hand BA is advertizing extra lines for the home while going
before the FCC saying that the phone system is overloaded and that it
should be allowed to charge ISPs for time used. (Since BA is an ISP are
they going to charge themselves?)

2) BA is still talking about charging a long distance connection fee for
internet use.

OK, I'M FINISHED VENTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have call waiting deluxe? This will give you the two tone
sound insteaad of one. You can call the business office and tell them
to turn off your call waiting flag on your caller ID deluxe service to
fix this problem. You will then get the one tone instead of two.

That depends on the switching equipment connected to your phone line.
Older electronic switching systems make a click at each end of the
tone. Newer equipment just has tones.

In any event, where I am (Pacific Bell/California) you automatically
get cancel call waiting with call waiting. Dialing *70 before
dialing the number cancels it for that call. So in my dialing
sequences on calls using my modem, they look something like:
ATDT *70,555-1212
(The comma in there tells most modems to pause for a second or
two before dialing the rest.)

What, can't you put a *70 before the number you dial to disable call
waiting???
