Everbest's ZyXEL trade-in programme

Seeing Everbest's (local authorized ZyXEL distributor) advert for
their ZyXEL V.34 modem in the Standard/Sing Tao computer paper (a
local bi-weekly computer-orientated newspaper) mentioning a trade-in
programme, I rang up to enquire for the details.

Wasn't particularly hopeful for a good deal as ZyXEL's local
distributors over the years have always been kind of greedy, I learnt
that by trading in my ZyXEL U-1496E+, I would get HK$500 (US$64)
knocked off my purchase of a Elite, which is around HK$5000 (US$640)
in this part of the world.

I said thank you and hung up.

Q: If you could get in the time machine and go back and change one thing
that's happened in the history of computing, what would it be?
A: "I would have written a BASIC interpreter for the first PCs".

I suggest you does not buy ZyXEL Elite modem as ZyXEL Elite 2864 is very unstable. I have lent a ZyXEL Elite 2864 from my friend and found that it is very incompatible with communication software in PC/Windows. I have put the ZyXEL Elite in BBS and found it cannot answer the call after half-an-hour in operation. My friend have talked about Everbest and found that Everbest does not know Modem Technical support. Their staff just asked my friend to complain HK Telco's telephone line only. That company is use

lessness.

Not many I would believe. There was no upgrade plan for existing 1496
owners, I got a quote of $6500 when I first saw their advert, most
business users would still pick the Hayes, and most of the BBS SysOps
have already got their cheap USR Courier. Others more knowledgable
people like Goodwin has got their Supra...

Well the poor EverBest want to make profit by following the way TCL did in
their old days but they forget this is 1995 when modem is no longer being
regarded as high-tech product and ZyXEL is not cash cow anymore - they
actually not even as good as old 1496 series from those people in Usenet.

Today we have a lot of quality modem to chose from with lotta more cheaper
price then why should we buy ZyXEL for extra 1M RAM and that
oh-so-good-but-ZyXEL-only voice capability?

So that , Don't expect the ISDN upgrade, could be more expensive,
I though the Zyxel Upgrade to V.34 modem only need to pay about
1000 HKD, because a Brand new V.34 just 1xxx

One thing I've learnt over the years. When you choose a modem, never pay
any premium for a "future" feature or upgradability. It's just $$ down the
drain. Never have I found an upgrade or trade-in plan which gives you a
discount for what you've pre-paid.

Having said that, FlashROM is the only thing which comes close, perhaps.

Frankie,

YES! TOTALLY AGREE.... I think no one will consider to upgrade with
that bloody high price. In fact, a new one only add few hundred bucks.
I think the modem is good but the service of this distributor is very
poor. First time, when I call them and ask whether they have the
upgrade programme, the answer is call you later. Then, I think they
call the hell (no respond). I think they should lower down the price
and give more effort to support it.
