My birthmother and the Houston and Austin members of a mailing list she's on are planning to get together to discuss some issues of common interest in the next few weeks. They'd like to meet somewhere between the two cities, but can't come up with any good places to eat. Does anyone have any ideas for good restaurants on either of the major routes between the two cities? They'd like to get together on a Sunday afternoon, so the restaurant would have to be open then... Thanks! The restaurant is the Country Inn. I would also suggest Must Be Heaven just off the square downtown Brenham. Wonderful soups, sandwiches, homemade pies and of course Blue Bell Ice Cream. I am not sure whether it is open on Sunday. If you like Mexican food, Manuals in Brenham offers pretty good fare. >Cecil Habermacher wrote: >> >> My birthmother and the Houston and Austin members of a mailing list she's >> on are planning to get together to discuss some issues of common interest >> in the next few weeks. Near Carmine, along 290 there's a town called Valhalla. It consists of one restaurant as far as I know "Wall's Valhalla". Large portions, homey atmosphere low prices. Also, in the LaGrange-Columbus area: Bon Ton, Cottonwood and Mikeska's Bar-b-Q. zoot > >Cecil Habermacher wrote: >> >> My birthmother and the Houston and Austin members of a mailing list she's >> on are planning to get together to discuss some issues of common interest >> in the next few weeks. It's far enough Houstonians get to enjoy the rolling hills part of Texas' scenery. The Bon-Ton Room there has a Sunday afternoon buffet with chicken fried steak and fried chicken to chicken pot pie and other casserole type entrees. It includes10 or so vegetable dishes - all home-cooked. Also take menu orders. At 2pm two weeks ago it had a room with several extra long settings and it was not crowded. We sat next to one family reunion. The waitresses are straight out of a TV sitcom set. Heck, the whole restaurant is. About $6. Smaller is the Cottonwood, lost some of its luster since it's been bypassed. And then there are the sausage places along there. I wish I could remember the name of the BBQ place that has hauled in so many taxidermed animals over the years I keep one arm ready to cover my plate should they lunge. (It's not as dusty or unsanitary as it sounds, really!) Hane Hudson jhudson@b4-u-buy.com http://www.b4-u-buy.com

Of *course* LaGrange is near the halfway point! ;-)

The venerable Cottonwood, once a favorite halfway stop, has declined, and has seen me for the last time. I was driving a client from Austin to Houston last November, regaling him with tales of the earthly delights awaiting him at The Cottonwood, especially the bread. Alas, the food was mediocre to poor and the place smelled like a long-unscrubbed bathroom. Significantly, the once-jammed restaurant was empty. Pity. I'll miss it.
