Chicken Rip-off!

Good ol Kentucky Fried Chicken has a new sign out back that says " Atm
as easy as cash!" So, I thought KFC might be a good idea for dinner
tonight, and I pulled in the drive thru and placed my order.

When I got the total at the window and handed them my ATM card for
payment, they said "we are adding a charge of 99 cents to your order
because you're using an ATM card." I said to them that they must be
joking, right? But they surely were not.

Many Wendy's restaurants now accept Visa and M/C, and they do not charge
you an extra fee just for your ATM card even if it happens to be a check
card.

So, beware KFC's extra charge for using your ATM!

If we complain, they will stop this practice.

Why don't you just get an ATM/Visa/MC debit card?

Well, you dimbulb, you might consider asking about purchases BEFORE
making them. As opposed to credit cards which are a fixed percentage
3-4% of purchase, ATM's are flat-rate or a minimum plus a percentage.
They are CASH ADVANCES and if you READ the info that your bank gives
you when you get an ATM card you would know that. Since KFC is acting
as an ATM they collect the bank fee up front.

But I really wouldn't expect a wingnut to delve into details and
facts, they don't in their politics or religion: It interferes with
their dinner whines!

Well, interesting. Albertsons, HEB, Walmart and a host of other places
accept my ATM/Visa, give me cash back, and don't charge me an extra fee.
Even tho they're "acting as an ATM". The cash I get back at the register
certainly isn't a "cash advance" as I'm using my debit card, and the
transaction as a whole isn't a "credit transaction", its a debit.

I guess I'd be asking KFC exactly what they're doing with that 99c if
they're collecting it as an "ATM fee". In order to accept plastic of any
sort (debit, credit) a merchant has to pay a processing fee; I have yet to
meet a merchant outside of Ebay who doesn't absorb that fee.

But since I don't eat KFC I really don't care...

This "logic" is ridiculous. It is clear that KFC is simply
tacking on an additional fee for the service. It has
nothing to do with the bank, but the bank may also impose a
fee (mine does not).

I agree with Tracey. KFC is charging too much for a service
that should be free.

Curious that KFC says 'ATM as easy as cash' instead of 'Debit cards
accepted.' So is there a difference between saying you're an ATM
versus saying you accept debit cards?

A debit payment is fee-free, even if cash is returned. But use an ATM
not belonging to your bank and you pay a fee.

Either way, what KFC is doing reeks of sleaze. Easy as cash?
Shouldn't that imply the same price? Costing more is not as 'easy'...

I do the same thing. I'll run into a Walgreens and buy a pack of gum or a
bottle of water and get cash back. Compared to an ATM, it is like getting
the drink for free.

No, this is NOT a reasonable expectation. Sonic, Whataburger, Wendy's, Taco
Cabana all take credit/debit cards and do NOT charge fees. It would be one
thing to have them charge a fee but tell you UP FRONT that this is the case.

Funny, I've used my credit/debit card at a local Taco Bell/KFC for lunch and
I was never charged extra. Then again, I always let them run it as a credit
card instead as a debit card.

Either way, the customer should be warned up front that there will be an
extra charge, not sneakily tacked on once they have your order ready.

Really, Mr I-Think-Im-So-Smart?

Then tell me why I can use the ATM at a gas station, Wendy's, and a host
of other places and never ever get charged....of course, it would be silly
to remind you that for decades, you've been able to use your ATM, not VISA
or MC at almost any grocery store without any extra charges being added in
either from your bank, or the store.

What say ye, dumbo?

as cash. KFC has a little gimmick they are playing on us, thats all it is.

Sure. But this is sort of a scam in a way, and Im not like some
commie/lib who would scream that "it should be against the law". No, I
don't agree with that. But, at the same time, I think when a scam is
being pulled, we should help to inform each other via the net, and
pressure the outfit to stop the games.

KFC has a huge name, and they are tarnishing it with this under-handed
fee.

Why anybody would pay a "fee" to get your own money is beyond me. Look at it
this way, in YOUR account you have this CASH sitting there. It is yours, not
the banks, they are "holding" it for you. You use a "card" to retrieve it,
let's say 20.00 cash. The "bank" charges you 2.00 to get it. You just paid
10% interest to the "bank" to get money that is already yours for a
transaction that took 30 seconds. Multiply that by (you pick a number of
transactions) the number it happens every day. No wonder the banks are
rolling in dough. You didn't "borrow" it as in a loan to be paid back. What
a racket. I'm in the wrong business. I wonder if a case for larceny could be
made here?

They're good at gimmicks. Remember what they USED to be called, before
"Fried" was a bad word. Let's not do anything to make the food healthier,
let's just change the name so idiots won't realize it is fried.

Not true. You might pay a fee. My credit union does not
charge me for using out of network ATMs, and some out of
network ATMs do not charge me.

I suspect KFC will discontinue the surcharge after enough
people complain.

Really? You mean your grocery store charges you an ATM fee, and then your bank
does too?

It is improbable but not impossible that KFC is charging this money just to
make us pay it. It is more likely that KFC and/or their POS vendor have
negotiated a bad deal with their payment processor so the cost is simply
passed along to the comsumer. Wendy's, grocery stores, and gas stations
obvisouly have a different deal. Certainly the volume at a grocery store or
gas station would make it cheap enough to absorb the cost. That is why you
don't get charged at other places.

I went to a KFC two weeks ago and paid with a debit card (two rare
occasions!) and was not charged - so I'm sure the franchisee at the store
that charges $0.99 does not expect much business from debit cards in that
part of town.

I received a call 10-8-02 from the KFC manager on N. Bell in Austin or Cedar
Park. This was a result of posting this thread to their KFC.com web site.
He said they do not charge for ATM cards, but he is running a Company store.
The franchisees may charge for ATM card use.

Thats good news. So, I will post information on the KFC store that is charging
for ATM usage, but has a sign up "Easy as cash".

I will post the managers name, phone and store address for KFC customers who
might like to express their views on the 99cent ATM fee.

That may very well be. I don't consider MSG to be a spice but an
adulterant.

It's not about what's *'cost effective'*, since the really cost effective
way is to absorb the fee into the overhead/gp margin and make it an extra
penny for everyone, not an extra 99 for the select few who use this method
of payment. It's supposed to be about *market share*. The point would be to
try to capture some of the (growing) market segment that carries ATM/CC
cards only and NO cash (I'm one of those). The extra charge shows they don't
understand this market segment they're supposedly trying to reach. *We* know
which eating establishments accept cards and which don't. KFC (BTW, has
anyone else verified this 'extra charge' story?, not that I'd know, I never
eat at KFC), if indeed it charges extra, is guilty of *autarky* (an economic
word for
being-the-one-lone-dumbass-who-does-things-differently-when-the-established-
method-works-so-much-better), which typically creates its own punishment.
When I'm out and about trying to figure out where to stop for lunch, I think
"what's near here that takes cards" and if I know a place doesn't take them,
I don't consider it an option. If KFC wants to be on the short-list of
places we'll consider stopping at, it needs to hide that extra charge by
diluting it over all the orders (as everyone else does) or it will end up
annoying enough of those of us who use cards for our purchases that we'll
consider it a non-card-friendly establishment, just as it was before it
kinda-sorta-half-assed accepted them, which defeats the purpose of adding
the 'new' payment method. The fees they pay really *aren't* high enough to
justify singling us out and passing it on to us. Someone must have pitched
this to a clueless board as a source of extra revenue. If they truly want
our business, they need to operate just as everyone else (Sonic,
Whataburger, Wendy's, Taco Cabana, Hartz, selected Jack-in-the-Box
locations, etc.) does.

Most businesses that accept an atm card for goods and services don't sell 99
cent hamburgers. The cost from the financial institution for the use of
this service could be as much as 60 cents (or more) to the establishment.
It doesn't make much sense to sell a 99 cent burger... get 99 cents for
it... then pay Bank of America (or some other banking institution) 60 % of
it. The fact is that it costs a lot of money for banks to provide that
service. Yes... it's YOUR money... but, they don't HAVE to give it to you
24 hours a day on demand just because you want it. It's a service and some
services are optional. We have to decide for ourselves if being able to get
a crappy hambvurger at 11:00 at night when we don't have a penny in our
pockets is worth anything extra. If not... do without a hamburger..... eat
at home, or carry 2-3 dollars around in your pocket.

;-)
