Subject: Comparison NZ and NA
 
Thank you for your reply to our letter. We compared the size of New Zealand
with the size of the USA. We found that we could fit almost 35 New Zealands
into the size of the USA.  We measured New Zealand and USA maps with string
and then estimated distances using the scale printed on each map. We estimate
that the furthest someone in NZ has to go to get to the Ocean of major lake is 
100 km (62.1 miles). That  means you could get there and back easily within a
day. The closest ocean to us is 300 miles (482.7 km) west, the Pacific, on the 
Washington coast, or the Atlantic Ocean is approximately 2,400 miles east.
Eight of the ten people in our class have visited the ocean within the last 3
years. For us it takes a day of travel to get there. We estimate that New
Zealand's coastline is 1,500 miles. We measured 3,750 miles for the USA (along 
the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and Pacific coast). That's a lot of coastline
for the size of your country!
 
How near to the seashore do you live? How often do you go to a beach? Do you
eat a lot of fish? What town do you live in? How many people live in your
town? What is the temperature there? We are beginning Fall and the temperature 
is 50-70 F. during the days. We started school 5 weeks ago (September - June). 
What is the school calendar in New Zealand?  Audrey commented that you may
have a strong sense of place in your country because you can probably know all 
the parts of it. We hope you will write back.
