In response to your call for exchange of what's happening, here's what's happening in the eastern portion of the state Washington, USA. The Weather We have had mostly clear skies, warm, sunny days(60-70 * F. ) and cool nights (30-40 * F.) . We had a frost two nights ago, nipping my tomato and squash plants. The Plants Chrysanthemums and other fall flowers are in full bloom. The leaves on the trees are falling fast, about an inch deep a day in the park with deciduous trees. In other parts of our city pine needles are collecting too. The Birds Most summer birds have left. Empty nests are seen in the trees. We have not yet seen flocks of geese and ducks on the Pacific Flyway. We have a national wildlife preserve near our city which should be busy in just a few weeks. It has been so dry for two years, however, that many of the ponds have dried up reducing the preserve's ability to offer respite for flocks. The Minibeasts One advantage of the dry weather is no mosquitos! We have not been bothered at all this summer. However, we have had a great abundance of yellow jackets and wasps. Spokane's coordinates are near 118 W. and 48 N. Discovery School is a small, private k-6 school in Spokane, WA. As the Library/Media/Computer teacher, I have been trying to be alert to telecommunication opportunities for each class. I gave your "Global Environmental Watch" letter to Mary, our Early Center teacher. This fits nicely with her style and curriculum. She would like to take a monthly walk with the children, making observations and sharing them with you. I will simply bring them your postings. Each child has a journal. She has made a copy of your letter to paste into each child's journal and they made drawings (and a few words or letters) of what they saw on their walk. Upon returning to the classroom, they wrote the letter together. Great idea to share observations.
