I think the best way to do pen pals is to establish contact with one other  
classroom and exchange names for pen pals as a starter.

The other good way is to write to someone who already is writing in the chat  
area.  However too many pen pals is overwhelming to some of the scribes.  I  
would guess a maximum of 3-5 pen pals for a start at the elem ed level.
