>My question: Why are the Americans better at creating spin-offs? What are >we doing wrong? What are they doing right? 1.You just said how many things Waterloo has "spun off." Plus we don't know about some that are outside of the waterloo area. We also don't know about how many companies are infiltrated with many Waterloo grads but couldn't be termed "spun off." 2.You mentioned two examples for Waterloo, and two for the U.S. Even if the U.S. had twenty to our two, they country is ten times they size! 3.California is where 80% of the computer industry is headquarted. Try getting someone there to listen to your idea from up here. It will be very, very, expensive (you will probably have to fly down). I'd say Canada is doing quite well in the high tech industry...Northern Telecom,ATI, Corel, Alias, Watcom, Maple, Adlib (R.I.P.) etc. etc.
