+I went to Cafe Katsu last Tuesday evening on the recommendations of
+several people. It is on Sawtelle in West L.A. between Olympic and
+Santa Monica.

+
+We waited 10 minutes ...
+Another 15 minutes went by before the waiter arrived at our table ...
+
+This was a first date, and one of my criteria for the restaurant was a
+quiet atmosphere; Katsu was so noisy when it filled up (at about 7:30)
+that we could not hear one another in normal conversation, though we
+were sitting fairly close to each other.

My wife and I went last night (Sun) before I saw this review.

We also had a very big problem with service. There were two waitresses
for a full restaurant. And, it was also attitude. I asked a waitress
for a knife as the busboy took my knife with the appetizer plate.
She said: okay. Then I noticed her sitting around. Perhaps she
misunderstood? So, I asked again. She said that the knives were
being washed and went back to lounging. Why couldn't she tell me
the first time, instead of answering "okay"????. Then the other
waitress arrived with dinner (they don't seem to have fixed tables
and help each other). I asked for a knife, and she got me one.
Someone at another table kept getting up to hunt down a waitress.
It was apparent that somnetimes he got up to repeat a request that
he had once asked.

Zagat rates them as a Japanese-French restaurant and gives them high
marks on service. In speaking to the waitress, it is under a new
owner. And there is no trace of Japanese anywhere except the name.

I, too, liked the food. It cost us $54 (before tip) for two
dinners, 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, 1 desset, and a coffee. We didn't
consider the good food worth the bad service or the noise. Your
mileage may vary.
