If you take dull I-5, there's little more to say than what others have
already said -- I concur with most of it (including finding the Harris
Ranch coffee shop a decent lunch stop, but nothing exceptional). But
if you take 101, there are many more possibilities. If you're doing a
full day trip, you could even choose to take Hwy 1 along the scenic
Big Sur coast (slow, but spectacular). It would be a lot easier to
respond to you on restaurants if you first map out a route and schedule,
so you'll know roughly where you'll be at meal times.
