In my opinion, a proper Cobb salad is made from finely shredded lettuce, atop which the other finely chopped or crumbled ingredients are placed _in separate little piles_ : bacon, blue cheese, avocado, and hard-boiled egg. It is then dressed with Green Goddess dressing. I don't have the research to back this up, however it is my belief the above is pretty close to the original. A key point is that the salad is not tossed before serving. (More recently, some Angeleno restaurants have taken to bringing the salad -- untossed, with ingredients separately arrayed -- to your table for your inspection, and then tossing it before serving it to you. I have no idea who dreamed up that twist on things.) Steve
