California has some of the most glorious sites in the universe. (imho) of which, Kings Canyon National Park might head that list. If you're the outdoors type don't miss this fabulous setting, but don't go on any of the holiday weekends. During the week is much better. If you're excited by more concrete attractions, then the views from the Oakland Bay Bridge, travelling into San Francisco, and a ferry ride from the islands into Seattle (Washington) are breathtaking. While in San Francisco, a cable car ride down Hyde to the warf is exhilerating. Both of these cities offer exquisite archetectural/scenic splendor. I agree with the trip up (or down) highway 1 in California. A must do if you have the time and fortitude. If you head to the dreaded Los Angeles (of which I am native) then - Pasadena, Huntington Gardens; Universal City Walk/Studios and Disneyland of course; Perhaps the beach communities of Huntington, Hermosa, Redondo, Manhattan, etc. If your feeling decadent - Beverly Hills. Further south toward San Diego - Del Mar, Encintas, La Jolla are all gorgeous coastal communities.
