Sounds like a fun thing to do, sure wish I could afford to do it.
That late in the year, make sure you have chains and snow equipment
if you intend to travel the northern rockies on your trip. Our
rockies may be similar to your alps, but they are still worth the
visit, IMHNO.

Bring lots of strong coffee or no-doz. You'll need it to keep
awake whilst being forced to poke along at our current speed limits
of 55 or 65. Either that or restrict your wanderings to Montana
where enforcement of the national limit is extremely lax.
You'll want to avoid large cities on weekends or at commute times
from 5-9 am and 3-7 pm unless you like trundling along at 5 mph
or less next to commuters reading their papers, picking their
noses, etc.

The large Utah/Arizona canyons are definitely worth seeing. I
personally would recommend Canyonlands and Arches National
Monument, both near Moab, Utah. Also Capitol Reefs in
western Utah. Maybe also riding the Narrow Guage railway in
western Colorado.
The Grand Canyon if you insist, but on the way there, why not
see the big Meteor crater that was featured in Starman?
A cruise up the redwoods of the west coast, particularly near
Santa Barbara, Monterey, and north of Santa Cruz (or even better
in northern California) is worth the detour. If you bring a nice
touring car, Highway 1 is fantastic--but don't tell anyone, it
gets crowded enough already.
Mount St. Helens may still be steaming away in western Oregon,
right along the georgeous Columbia river that you won't want to
miss.

Hmmm, wonder if Industrial Light and Magic offers tours?
You probably want to hit the Berkeley and Stanford campusi as well
as the local coffee shops near them--particularly Berkeley and
University of Santa Cruz.
