living on the San Andreas
_________________________
I have so many memories
of kneeling in confused prayer
in doorways and under tables
while the too-tight dress of
California's earthquake faults
popped another seam
so I keep my mother's bridal
made-in-england fine bone china
on the lowest cupboard shelf
safe
from the tilt-a-whirl of dirt
that would break the brittle memories
of family dinners where rage and insults
shook the mashed potatoes
