If you are in need of an Internet provider in Southern CA, do yourself a favor
and steer clear of KAIWAN Internet.
On 8 June 95 at approximately 2pm, Luke Hwang instituted a TIA ban between the
hours of 7pm and midnight. The ban went into effect that same evening, and
anyone running TIA between those hours would have their accounts terminated
immediatly. At 7pm, approximately 20 people had their accounts suspended for
no other reason than not reading the message of the day when winsock executed
their login script. There is NO proof that TIA is the cause of system
slowdowns at KAIWAN. However, as owner of KAIWAN, Luke Hwang as every right to
determine what he will allow to run on his system. He does not, however, have
the right to suspend the accounts of paying customers without so much as a
warning, or discussion.
The *very* next day (Friday), KAIWAN announced a new flat rate SLIP/PPP
account. It is clear that Mr. Hwang's intentions were to ban TIA so as to
force its users to purchase the new more expensive account. This is
unacceptable. As of June 10th, there is no explanation from KAIWAN or Luke
Hwang as to why the ban was instituted without warning.
I have had an account with KAIWAN for the last year and a half, and this is
just one more example of the lack of professionalism, courtesy, and customer
service exhibited by the incompetent folks at KAIWAN. The system is slow, even
when there are few users logged in. This problem has been around for over a
year, yet Mr. Hwang is at a loss to explain it. When Mr. Hwang does offer an
explanation, it is usually "maybe KAIWAN not for you." Mr. Hwang is incapable
of keeping his news server up and running for more than 48 hours, this is not
an exaggeration. When attempting to post news you are more likely to get "no
diskspace", or "unable to post" messages than "news posted" messages.
There are quite a few decent internet providers in the L.A. area offering
competitive prices and good customer service. KAIWAN is *not* one of them.
