Jay, The messages you are seeing regarding modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-4 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-5 Are harmless, it just means that the modprobe is searching for compiled modules you haven't compiled (If I can remeber correctly, one of them is for an compatibility with an Apple ethernet standard), if you are using RedHat, then it is easy to stop the modprobe for looking for these modules by inserting the following lines into your /etc/conf.modules file; alias net-pf-4 off # Don't search for IPX module alias net-pf-5 off # Don't search for Appletalk module And if you don't have any scsi devices on your system, you can also add; alias scsi_hostadapter off #Don't look for scsi module If you are not running RedHat, then I am not sure if this will work. (Under Slackware, I think you can edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file to remove unwanted modules, or there will be an equivalent /etc/rc.d/rc.* file there that will search for the net-pf-4 and net-pf-5 stuff) With regards to the SMC 9332-BDT fast ethernet cards, good luck. We have had an enormous amount of trouble trying to get these cards to work under Linux (and even Windows95) - we haven't yet isolated what the problem is, but it may well be the hub we are using, so beware that you may come across problems like this. On the up-side, I have heard of successes with these cards using varying hardware, and also that the more recent versions of these cards are more robust (We are using SMC 9332BDT 21140A-C versions of these cards). Drivers for these cards, (and for a fair few others) can be found at the excelent site maintained by Donald Becker. http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ I would recommend obtaining version tulip.c version 0.76 and compiling as a module to be included with your kernel. regards, Andrew Mc.Ghee Mechanical Engineering University of Queensland
