Hi There,
I know WinModem aren't suppose to work in Linux, but I heard that with
Redhat Linux 6.0 you can make one work with an Emulator of some sort... if
anyone know something about that or any name that could make me on a path,
please Email me! Thanks Alot

To put It bluntly: No, there isn't. And I wouldn't wait for one if I where
you, I don't see it being written in the near future. (For info, go to
www.linmodems.org).

Do you have a dual boot system? I believe that some people have reported
success if they can load Windows, shut down to DOS, and use the dosboot
utility to slip into Linux. If you can do this, your modem won't
"forget" the instructions in its driver.

There is NO emulator as far as I know, but I have heard of a way around it,
which is to startup win9x, so the modem gets configured to COMx, restart in
dos mode, and run loadlin to start your linux. I personally have not tried
it but I heard that it works.
goodluck,
kon

I read similar articles in all Chinese Linux NG, and found Winmodem supports
Win ONLY, no way in Linux

Winmodem is an oxymoron. It is NOT a modem. It is called a modem by
lying manufacturers and salesmen. It contains the bare essential
hardware to make a connection but utilizes windows software to imitate a
modems behaviour. There is not nor will there probably ever be any way
to use it without windows installed. You should buy a REAL modem.
Winmodem is a tarbaby designed to keep you stuck on windows. Only a
real jerk would flame you. Thousands have been cheated by this ruse.
(By the way, the crossposting is not only unnecessary, it is irritating
when offtopic)

windows SUCKS! Why not just get a plain old Modem and hook it up to your
Linux box and you're on your way? They're not too hard to find and
relitively cheap these days.

Here in linux.redhat.misc, "Peter Heffner" <pheff@bluemoon.net>
spake unto us, saying:

There is no way that I will ever recommend such a modem to a friend,
coworker, client, or anyone else. The idea of stealing CPU cycles for
doing modem emulation is ludicrous when inexpensive hardware-only
solutions exist.

Not only are you using CPU for something best used elsewhere (IMhO),
but even with the PC-TEL modem you are limited to Windows and Linux.

Why place yourself (or your clients) under such restrictions?

Just as long as Linux doesn't do a factory reset, eh? I'd be very
hesitant to say that your suggestion would work. It's been my
experience in 8 years of tech support that WinModems make great door
stops. I felt the say way about Rockwell and their wonderous RPI
stuff.

For all the Linux 'screw heads' who responded to this message by throwing
rocks at WinModems (which by the way are real modems .... they work don't
they) PC-TEL (http://www.pctel.com) has recently announced a LinModem (i.e.
software driven modem for Linux). The PC-TEL manufactures chips for OEM's.

The LinModem (or not real modem is on the way). Maybe this will quiet down
the Linux radical who appear to have less comput knowledge than a MS Windows
wanabee and half the computer experiance.

If you can boot to Windoze or Dos and configure the modem, then warm/soft
boot into Linux and have the modem actually then work, its not a win modem, but
a PnP modem that is soft set, eg software configured. Not the same as a win
modem, but almost as much a pain. Older Zoom ComStar's are a prime example.
