Hi

The CD drive is directly connected to your soundcard, which sends it
right to the speakers, so you should always hear sound (unless the
CD-volume is muted in an OS). I guess you tried this, but have tried to
just double-click on a WAV file, or MIDI file? And, when you run
sndconfig, it runs two tests, for midi- and for wav-output. If that
worked, then it's just a matter of enabling the sound-events in KDE or
GNOME. I don't know about other shells.

Look in the KDE/GNOME menus for 'settings,' 'sounds' or 'multimedia.'
Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I don't think you need a need a new Kernel.
