Install Problems RH 8

My first attempt at installing Linux (Red hat 8) hasn't gone very well.

My system, Athlon 2000+ (1.7GHz), 512 Mb Ram, 64 mb Nvidia GeForce4 MX440
video card, 2 Hard drives each 80 G (Seagate).

Booting from the installation CD worked, I initially selected 'Graphical'
which merely took me to a blue screen and froze. Subsequent attempts I
selected 'Linux Text' ....noprobe.....lowres....

Ok I got lost with which option I selected to eventually show me a CD Media
tester. The result of the CD media tester failed (was the installation CD)
placed another CD in machine that failed the test.

Couldn't get any further.

I'm now thinking of copying the 3 installation CD's to my C:\ drive and then
installing from the hard-drive to my D:\ drive.

What are my options now.......Am I missing something really simple here.

Steven Taylor
Melbourne, Australia.

Hi,
to avoid you a lot of time lost in such attempts...
I've the same problem (I also have an Athlon), and I was not able to install
R8.0 (I was able to install R7.0, instead).

I ask to the whole World, but the anwers didn't solve anything. The guys of
the RedHat support adviced to me a lot of "undocumented" options to be
passed at the boot prompt, but none of them proved to be useful. At last I
returned to my old R7.0. My regret concern the money I spent to buy the
RedHat package!

RH8 has some real problems.
Get RH7.3 or try Mandrake 9.0 or Suse 8/8.1

It is commonly suggested to test your CD if you get this problem and from

it seems that your CD is not too healthy try verifying the ISO you burnt it
from or if you purchased it then take it back and have it replaced.

in the past i've had so many similar problems trying to install redhat,
it's just not funny! however, i had no problems at all installing rh7.3
recently. i certainly wouldn't even think about trying to use rh8.0 (or
rh7.0!). i'll wait till at least 8.2 or maybe 8.3 before i think about
upgrading my home 7.3 system. the two servers i look after at the
local community radio station run rh7.2 with a few security updates etc,
and they're unlikely to get upgraded to 8.anything in the forseeable
future.

however, if you'd rather be using 8.0 than your current 7.0, why not use
the 8.0 installation cds to *upgrade*? you ought to be able to do that,
even if you can't install from scratch.

and, to the original poster: it's definitely worth a try copying the
contents of the cds onto another partition, but before you do that, make a
boot floppy (and a root floppy? i dunno how it works with rh8.) and try
and boot from those and get the install started. if you get to the stage
where it wants the source packages, then it's worth copying the cds to
your hdd. if you can't get it to that stage by booting from floppy, then
you'll be wasting your time. rh8.1 is out now, it probably makes more
sense to install that anyway.

good luck!

I've had no major troubles with RH8.0 on 2 dell laptops and an assortment of
desktops.

Some minor irritations, like poor AA font rendering and some weird behaviour
with Mozilla and cups printing, but nothing has stopped me from using it on
a daily basis. My realtec NICs wont work with DHCP , but i just swapped in
a different card. (realtec driver doesn't detect cable, so dhcp refuses to
work, but you can manually set the IP without dramas)

My servers are still 7.x , but i've not need to upgrade them.

I usualy don't comment on such postings, but in this case...

I have been installing Red Hat since 5.1 as a server OS, with no GUI. I
have installed every version MANY times each: 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2,
7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0 and I have NEVER had an installation problem on
any version so far. I have used 7.3 as a workstation and now I have Red
Hat 8 and am using it at both work and home at a workstation. I have
installed it some 10-15 times so far on PCs at work and have never had a
problem. The PCs are a varied range of Duron, Athlon and Celeron based
systems in a whole lot of configurations, with SCSI and IDE HD, CD and
CDRW drives, SCSI DAT drives, PCI and AGP video cards, Intel, 3com,
Realtek ethernet cards etc etc. I have not had a problem with ANY
installation at all. However, I nearly always use the text installer and
not the GUI, but I have used the GUI a few times, still with no problem.

I have had a couple of post-installation issues with sound drivers etc,
but nothing that has ever crippled the OS.

The PCs are just locally assembled with no particular reference to the
Hardware Compatibility List. I only use good quality components though,
like ASUS or MSI motherboards etc.

So I am confused as to the problems that you have mentioned, as this is
contrary to my own experience. Perhaps you need to consult the HCL and see
if your hardware is supported.

Regards,
Brad

no-ones perfect ;-)

up until recently i had slackware 8.0 on my msi, duron 800mHz, 256mb
SDram, 32X max cdrom drive, several hdd's of various origins and so on
and so forth.

the first time that i tried to install rh 8.0; nothing doing.

cd wouldn't boot, not a peep out of the old b*****

so, what did i do? well, i persevered (if that's how you spell it).

i tried installing other distributions until i stumbled on
mandrake 6.0 and then 6.1 which i managed to install and feeling like an
upgrade and really adventurous i finally managed to install rh8.0

i found, that by checking the progress of the installation by changing
terminals somehow nudged the ignorant c*** into doing something.

that's not the whole story but just fiddle around a bit and you'll find
your way. don't ask me how or why, but it worked for me twice.

i installed rh 8.0 twice just for the fun of it ;-)

apart from my experience just listen to will.

he knows what he's talking about.

good luck
