Linux startup problem.

I just installed Red Hat 4.02 for Intel kernel 2.0.30 From the
InfoMagic 6CD set.

When I reboot, I tipe in linux, otherwise my computer starts to load
DOS/WIN.

Then I get
loalhost login : if I type anything her, I get to pu in a password,
If i do not put anything in, I can not proceed.

If I put in a password, I get Login incorrect; Login.

The only time I had to put in a password, was during the instalation.

I might be stupid, but I do know I use the same password (It is 111111
at this moment) just to be sure I do not forget it.

What am I doing wrong during the instalation and or login?

your login/passwd should be root/111111
Either this is the correct login/passwd, else it gives Login incorrect.

If it still doesn't work, then type instead of 'linux' at the
lilo prompt, 'linux single', which will put you in a minimal linux
environment (single mode, no networking, etc..., but 'fail-safe')
No login will be required, you'll get a root shell.

There you can change the root passwd, view /etc/passwd, or whatever
To change your passwd (of the guy behind the prompt, i.e. root),
just type
# passwd

If it still doesn't work, you have a problem. Call 911!

I am having the exact same problem as the original question and I tried
your advice but I am now getting this message.

[root@localhost /root]#

I am sure this question might have a simple answer that I am just
missing in the documentation but I am new to Linux and haven't quite
figured it out yet (haven't even run it yet as a matter of fact.)
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Donnow, maybe your keyboard mapping was still wrong during the installation
or the numlock light wasn't lit ? Anyway : here's how to solve it.

Boot linux with the boot-time option 'single'. To do this, hold down
the shift key when the LILO prompt appears and enter something like
'linux single' (press tab to see a list of available kernel images).
If your system still asks for the root pwd, you'd better boot with
'linux init=/bin/bash' which will give you a root shell automagically.

Now you have a shell and your root fs is mounted, in readonly modus. it's
time to remount it writeable and this is how to do it :
mount -o remount -w -n /

Also mount the usr partition since this is where your favorite editor (vi?)
resides :
mount /usr (or, mount -a to mount everything).

Enter this :
/usr/bin/vi /etc/passwd

search a line which looks like this :
root:pNtkGHCSmlhfe:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Move to that line. (use the keys 'j' and 'k' to go up and down)
Now, use the keys 'l' and 'h' to go right/left, until you are just behind the
first ':'. Press 'x' several times until the line looks like this :

root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Now save the file : enter ':wq' and press enter.
(alternate way to change your pwd : hit /usr/bin/passwd, but remember : you're
 in querty!)

Now it's time to reboot. If you booted using the single option, logout,
press alt-ctrl-del or enter 'shutdown -r now' (whatever works for you to
reboot your computer). If you used the 'init=/bin/bash' way, reboot this
way :
umount -a
sync
sync
sync
logout (or power off or reset)

running 'shutdown' might work, but I never tested it.
Well, that's it. Boot linux again and login as root, no password will be
asked, unless you installed some uncool security tools.

You shouldn't type just anything at the 'login:' prompt, but rather the
name of the user wishing to log in to the system.

That was to set the password of the system administrator, whose username
is 'root' by default on most Unix systems (including Linux).

At the 'login:' prompt, type 'root'.
Then there will be a 'password:' prompt.
Here you type the password you set up whilst installing your Linux
system.

Better yet, print at least 'Linux Installation and Getting Started by
Matt Welsh' out. *.pdf-file is 236 pages, but it is worth it.
Otherwise, you will have to reboot all the time to swich between Linux
and Dos/Win.

And again thanks Wim for pointing m in th right direction. With a
empty index.htm file This is very hard to find on th disk.

Maybe it is on one of the five others, but on my cd-st nothing points
me there.
