Another dead end that I need ideas for:

We have a RH 4.2 server that is our production machine (no upgrading to
RH 5.x is not an option), and we have a RH 5.0 server that is our
development and training machine. The RH 5.0 machine also has a new SCSI
HP tape backup and of course with RH 5.0, it also has the BRU2000 backup
and restore package, but only for itself.

I want to backup the RH 4.2 server onto the 5.0's Tape Drive. I can't
use BRU2000 (no client version for 4.2), I could use rhbackup (but have
never used it before--is it reliable, robust, easy to leave as a
cronjob), or a custom script to run tar or cpio, or is there anything
else out there?

My questions:
1. What are people's recommendations on archive formats, tar, cpio, or
something else?
2. What tools are available for doing a network (as compared to a
localhost) backup like this?
3. I also don't want to back up the entire system whenever I do a total
backup. Some partitions will only change sporadically. I need to be able
to exclude some subdirectories within filesystems. Can anyone share any
backup scripts (PERL or shell) that they are using for this purpose?

Thanks.

We have 2 Linux servers here with a Sony 4/8 DAT drive in one of them. The
other server is mounted as an NFS volume. We use a backup program called
KBackup. It's very powerful allowing you to include/exclude files and entire
directories based on wildcards. It supports many formats, compression etc.
Look out for it.
