RH6.0 (Intel) and grep problem
#76

I've just installed RedHat 6.0 on my Intel and Sparc boxes, but have
noticed a problem with grep/fgrep/egrep on the Intel version. Instead
of returning the matching strings, it just returns the message "binary file
<blah> matches" when a match is found. The Sparc version works as
expected.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Mine does the same thing *if* the file that contains the matching string is
a binary and not text file.

I guess it's a feature to not trash your screen with a "line" from the
binary file.

This would be fine if the file was binary, but it isn't. :) The Sparc
version of RedHat 6.0 happy processes the same file with the same
parameters
as does Solaris. I'm pretty sure that the Intel version of RedHat 5.2 was
happy with it too, as I only noticed the problem after upgrading a couple
of days ago.
