Dear All, Newbie question: I've selected all the available colour and res's on RH 6.1 setup (X configurator). I think it's defaulting to 1280x1024. So now I can scroll through the options by doing the CTRL+ALT+NUM+ or NUM- thing. But, while this cranks the res up or down accordingly, the relative display size doesn't change; ie, the desktop size gets bigger than the physical screen size. So if I change to the next res down, things get bigger, but I have to move the mouse pointer to the edge of the screen and the display tracks to the edge of that desktop. This is a nuisance, and downright silly. Why doesn't the thing resize to match the display area, and more importantly, how do I tell it to? I haven't found anything in the docs yet. Also, what about colour? How do I change from 16 bit to 32 bit and back, etc. How do I know what the current settings are? (That little monitor icon in my Win98 system tray is handy!) Please help, 'cos I'm currently stuck at very high resolution. Running RH 6.1 i686 -- ----------------------------------- Marcus Leonard mdl@netspace.net.au -----------------------------------

OK lets try. In X-Windows you can chose (by default) between four color depth. 8,16,24,32 bits per pixel (bpp). In each color depth your combination of video card and monitor can give you number of resolutions which can be chosen by <Ctr+Alt+Num+/->. But the display is the highest HorxVer number of pixels at this color depth and you see on screen only part of it. For example: the hardware ability is 1600x1200 and you chose to display 800x600 you see quarter of display on screen. You can instruct your box to go into any color depth by invoking X-Windows with "startx -- -bppN" where N = 8,16,24,32. Now for the HARD part. Stop beying a "Newbie"! RTFM "man XF86CONFIG" and you will find there info how to instruct your display to behave to YOUR preferences. This IS Linux, your imagination is the limit. Quick and dirty: Go to XF86config and comment out the lines with "virtual".
