upgrading from RH7.1 to 7.2 gets "respawning too fast"

After upgrading my Redhat7.1 to 7.2, I get the following message looping
on reboot:

...
INIT: entering level 3
INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
...
and so on every 5 minutes...

Hopefully, I can boot on an alternate untouched "/dev/sdb1" so I still
have access to files on the upgraded filesystems (/dev/sda1 and others).

My previous kernel (2.4.17) leaves intouched by this upgrade, and is the
one booting. I wonder if there were something wrong with mingetty
(mingetty is tried to be respawn from init) ??

note: entering level 3 is correct; so it's not a problem of starting X.

Thank's for any help.

I had the same problem yesterday during yet another debian install.
The problem was that the installation procedure created an
/etc/inittab itself, in order to do some first setup thinks like root
passwd etc. The *real* /etc/inittab was located in
/etc/inittab/another_backup_file. I simply moved
/etc/inittab/another_backup_file to /etc/inittab and problem was
solved.

Hey,

I had this problem on a number of different occasions, and it
turned out to be the permissions on /tmp. So, I rebooted, started
runlevel
1, cleared out /tmp (cd /tmp; rm -r *; ) then cd'd to /, and did a chmod
1777 /tmp.
All was well after this. (if i remember right it was linuxconf that
changed the rights
on there, so I have not used it since, and have not had the problem
since.) running
RH72. Hope this helps!

- the rights on /tmp should read:
	drwxrwxrwt 13 root root 8192 Jul 15 19:15 tmp

	S.

I had the Problem this mornig too. I reconfigured X using the Xconfigurator
tool, after that the System booted normally.
