SUNSOFT ANNOUNCES SOLARIS FOR X86 EARLY ACCESS PROGRAM
SunFLASH Vol 45 #30 September 1992
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Demonstrates Multiprocessing On X86 For First Time
UNIX EXPO, New York, Sept. 22, 1992 -- SunSoft Inc. today announced the
Solaris for X86 Early Access Program, allowing system manufacturers and
software developers to take immediate advantage of the powerful 32-bit
system software. Starting next week, computer and software companies
will receive the Solaris for X86 software on a single compact disc (CD)
with a suite of development tools and documentation. SunSoft also
demonstrated the multiprocessing capabilities of Solaris 2.0 on a
Compaq SYSTEMPRO Model 486-840 for the first time here today.
The Solaris computing environment was shown on a range of PC systems
including Dell Computer, AST Research, Zenith Data Systems and single
and multiprocessor machines from Compaq Computer Corp. Already, Solaris
is backed by six of the top 10 PC compatible suppliers in the United
States and by three of the top five PC compatible companies in Europe.
In addition, software applications such as Arts & Letters, IDE,
Asterix, Progress and Island Write, Draw & Paint were demonstrated on
Solaris for X86.
"Solaris 2.0 will unite the world's largest 32-bit CISC and RISC
installed base with a single solution," said Janpieter Scheerder,
SunSoft vice president of software engineering. "And that's what end
users, developers and system administrators are seeking."
The Early Access Program is the first phase of SunSoft's comprehensive
strategy to make Solaris 2.0 available to the mainstream 386/486
computer market. It will be followed next month by the Solaris-On-Board
certification program for system manufacturers. At the end of the year,
SunSoft will begin Operation Collective Force, a program designed to
bring Solaris to volume end users. SunSoft will create account teams,
consisting of product and technical professionals, that will establish
pilot Solaris installations at large corporate sites. Working together
with these customers, the program enables information managers in
Fortune 1,000 companies to qualify Solaris for their enterprise
computing needs.
