Solaris 2.0 is now shipping
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Available today, Solaris(R) 2.0 combines the best
implementation of AT&T's SVR4 standard with Sun added
value--including multiprocessing, multithreading, and security
enhancements-- delivering the most powerful distributed UNIX(R)
computing environment in the industry to users of Sun's
SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) 1, 1+, 2, SLC(TM),
ELC(TM), IPC(TM) and IPX(TM) systems.
Solaris 2.0 also features the ONC(TM) networking environment
(including NFS(R), the de facto standard for file sharing), the
OpenWindows(TM) network-based windowing environment, the intuitive
OPEN LOOK(R) interface, and DeskSet(TM) user productivity tools.
For users of our high-volume multiprocessor platforms--the
SPARCserver 600MP Series or the SuperSPARC(R)-based
SPARCstation 10 and SPARCserver 10 systems--Solaris 1.1 Version
A lets developers jump-start work on future applications,
boosts productivity for current application users, and
facilitates the migration to SVR4 for system administrators.
In fact, all forthcoming desktop and server products will
support only Solaris 2.0 or later releases.
Tools for developing tomorrow's applications
Providing the first development environment for Solaris 2.0,
SPARCworks(TM) Professional--which includes the latest versions
of our SPARCompiler(TM) and SPARCworks development tools--lets
you create the distributed applications today that users will
be demanding tomorrow. And you can get an edge on developing
applications utilizing multiprocessing on SPARCserver 630MP and
670MP systems with the Solaris 2.0 MP OEM Access Kit.
Get a jump on tomorrow
It seems that no matter what computer platforms or tools you're
using today, there's always a "next generation" to worry about
or, depending on your point of view, to look forward to.
Now, with our Solaris 32-bit distributed system software
environment and related tools, Sun takes away the worry and
lets you not only look forward to, but get a jump on,
tomorrow's technology today.
That's because with built-in innovation and growth paths,
Solaris continually provides you with access to emerging
technologies. Today that means such things as multimedia and
distributed objects. Tomorrow, well, that's something else
Solaris users can look forward to.
And because all Sun SPARC(R) systems, on which the Solaris
software environment runs, are--and will continue to
be--binary-compatible, you never have to leave your
applications behind, whether you're developing them or using
any of the more than 4000 SPARC software solutions currently
available. Plus, the leading ISVs are developing new Solaris
applications as you read this.
Open all the way for more details on how Sun's platforms and
tools give you a jump on tomorrow.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sun support just got easier
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get round-the-clock access to support solutions developed by
Sun experts--the industry's best UNIX support people--with two
new offerings for Sun customers purchasing software support
contracts: SunSolve(TM) and Sun HelpDesk.
SunSolve puts expert support on your desktop
SunSolve makes support a whole lot easier and more convenient.
Now you can toss (or better yet, recycle) a mass of manuals,
guides, and bulletins--because SunSolve puts all this
information on a single CD-ROM that's updated quarterly. (In
most countries, SunSolve is also available electronically
through a modem. This version, called SunSolve Online, is
updated nightly.)
SunSolve gives you the latest and most important system
information to help keep your workstation up and running.
You'll have instant access to common system symptoms and
resolutions, software bug reports, bug and patch descriptions,
a variety of service information databases, and optional
integration with Sun's AnswerBook(TM) document database.
Based on the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface, SunSolve
software is intuitive and easy to use. Just type in a problem
description, press a button, and read the solution. With its
two powerful tools; SearchTool (which finds solutions in the
service information databases) and DocViewer (which lets you
view documents onscreen), SunSolve makes it simple for you to
get exactly the information you need--without ever leaving your
workstation.
Sun HelpDesk helps you provide expert support
If you're a service provider supporting large numbers of Sun
systems, Sun HelpDesk will make your job a whole lot easier.
It gives you the tools and support information you need to set
up your own help desk, handle service requests in the Sun
environment, and maintain your help desk to better support your
customers.
HelpDesk has all the capabilities of SunSolve (see story,
left), including the easy-to-use OPEN LOOK interface. In
addition, HelpDesk's TechEscalator tool gives you direct access
to Sun's support engineering staff through electronic mail, so
you can receive backline assistance when a solution is not
available in the online service information databases.
With its online and backline features, Sun HelpDesk helps Sun
contract customers provide their customers with expert
support-- faster and better than ever.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Platforms and tools for the long haul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The future is uncertain enough without having to worry about
whether your computer will be able to run the next generation
of applications and take advantage of new technologies. Or, if
you're a developer, whether the tools you're building
applications with today will even work for the applications of
tomorrow. Sun knows you have enough to worry about, so our
engineers have designed platforms and tools that you can stay
with over the long term.
Solaris: the platform that accommodates change
Solaris is the first system software product to combine so many
high-performance computing features--such as multitasking,
multiprocessing, multithreading, and network security--with the
ease-of-use capabilities of a graphical user interface. And,
it is the only software solution available today that provides
a compatible path to next-generation object-based computing.
Solaris 2.0--also known as "the killer environment" that's
designed to meet the evolving needs of application users,
software developers, and system administrators--is now
available for all Sun's SPARCstation and SPARCserver 1, 1+, 2,
SLC, ELC, IPC, and IPX systems.
Soon, it will also be available for Sun's high-volume,
multiprocessor desktops and servers, including the SPARCstation
10, SPARCserver 10, and SPARCserver 600MP Series. In the
meantime, Solaris 1.1 Version A provides the ideal transition
to Solaris 2.0 on these systems. Like Solaris 2.0, Solaris 1.1
Version A features OpenWindows Version 3, Sun's latest
windowing environment (available now in French, German,
Swedish, and Italian to facilitate your migration to Solaris
2.0 worldwide) and DeskSet Version 3, a set of 15 user
productivity tools. Plus, Solaris binary compatibility lets
you keep working with any of the more than 4000 SPARC
applications you already know how to use.
SPARCworks Professional: the tools for new developments
SPARCworks Professional is the first complete development
environment for Solaris 2.0. It consists of your choice of
four SPARCompiler products--for the latest versions of C, C++,
FORTRAN, or Pascal--plus the suite of six powerful, graphical,
and integrated SPARCworks 2.0 development tools. You can
purchase SPARCompiler products and SPARCworks tools separately,
but it's more economical to buy a complete SPARCworks
Professional package. And since the SPARCworks toolset works
across all four languages, you can simply add individual
SPARCompiler products for multilanguage development projects.
Also, because the SPARCompiler family and SPARCworks 2.0
toolset support both Solaris 1.0 and Solaris 2.0, you can use
the same toolset throughout your migration and quickly deliver
high- performance applications.
Optimized to produce very efficient code for all SPARC systems,
the new SPARCompiler products yield an 8-12% performance
improvement over the previous releases for applications running
on SuperSPARC-based systems. The new SPARCompiler products for
the four most common Sun software development languages
include:
o SPARCompiler C 2.0, which supports both ANSI and K&R C, as
well as 64-bit integer types
o SPARCompiler C++ 3.0, based on the UNIX System Laboratories
de facto standard Cfront release 3.0, gives you access to
templates, a powerful new feature
o SPARCompiler FORTRAN 2.0 has faster I/O performance, support
of 64-bit integer data types, and supports better viewing of
array data within the SPARCworks Debugger
o SPARCompiler Pascal 3.0, based on the Berkeley Pascal
compiler, has Domain Pascal extensions for easy migration from
Apollo (Note: for easy hardware migration, see the "Trade up
from HP/Apollo to Sun" story on this page)
Working with all four languages, the SPARCworks 2.0 toolset
includes four new and two enhanced tools:
o NEW. SPARCworks Manager manages the other tools and allows
Sun and third-party tools to be managed as a single session
o ENHANCED. SourceBrowser is a static program analyzer that
lets you easily get information about your code, make
intelligent queries into the code, and instantly get a
graphical layout of how the code functions are working
together
o ENHANCED. Debugger, based on Sun's dbx, gives new support
for optimized code and shared libraries, and its integration
with other tools speeds the edit/compile/debug cycle
o NEW. Performance Analyzer, a powerful, graphical performance
analyzer and optimizer with a unique disk paging improvement
tool, reduces virtual memory requirements of applications
o NEW. FileMerge, especially useful for concurrent
development, simplifies the task of comparing and merging
source files
o NEW. MakeTool, an OPEN LOOK interface for the UNIX "make"
utility, features animated icons that show the status of
programming builds
Floating licenses save you money
Sun's new floating licenses for SPARCompiler products and
SPARCworks 2.0 give you lots more freedom and flexibility, and
save you money to boot. Unlike the former node-locked systems
that tied software to a specific user or machine, floating
licenses let many part-time users share a single license to the
software. Like a library, occasional users "check out" the
software to use it and "return" it when they are done. Your
licensing fee is based on the maximum number of concurrent
users of the product--not the total number of users that may
ever use the software. A true network resource, our floating
licenses can be configured in a variety of ways to meet your
changing needs, increasing flexibility and reducing costs.
Complete Ada development environment
Providing unparalleled functionality and performance, Sun Ada
Development Environment (ADE) 1.1 is the leading Ada
development environment available on UNIX. It includes Sun Ada
1.1--the industry's most robust Ada compilation system--and
SPARCworks/Ada 1.1, a comprehensive set of OPEN LOOK tools that
accelerates Ada development.
Trade up from HP/Apollo to Sun
Are you working on an HP/Apollo workstation, or do you know
someone who is? Now through October 31, 1992 you can
participate in Sun's special HP/Apollo trade-up promotion and
start working on a SPARCstation instead. We're offering better
products, better prices, better availability, and a better
future than HP is offering to its own customers.
Plus, to ease your move from HP/Apollo's CISC/Domain to Sun's
SPARC/Solaris architecture, Sun provides help with
Domain/Solaris interoperability, software migration to Solaris,
and migration support services. (You'll also be interested in
the information on SPARCompiler Pascal 3.0 in the "SPARCworks
Professional" story on this page.)
Not only does Sun have twice as many applications (over 4000)
to choose from as HP, we give our customers the freedom to grow
like no other vendor. And our history of
innovation--continually in the making--is unparalleled in the
industry.
In Short
In our ongoing efforts to meet the needs of the international
marketplace, Sun has introduced localized Language Interface
Kits for OpenWindows Version 3. French, German, Italian, and
Swedish Language Interface Kits are now available worldwide.
SunNet(TM) Manager continues as the price/performance market
leader with the introduction of SunNet Manager 2.0. New
capabilities in this release enable you to quickly and easily
manage networks of virtually any size--from local area networks
to enterprisewide networks--through a single versatile tool.
Sun has introduced two new Type 5 keyboards for the
SPARCstation product line: 1) the Type 5 standard keyboard
features an industry-standard extended PC-101 layout, including
numeric edit/cursor control pads, 12 function keys, an 11-key
OPEN LOOK keypad, a new "System Control Keys" keypad, and the
availability of international and universal country kit
versions; and 2) the Type 5 UNIX layout, which is the same as
the Type 5 standard except for 4 keys (ESCape, CAPs LOCK,
CONTROL, BACK SPACE) that have modified locations.
Direct Xlib is a new product that significantly improves
rendering performance of your graphics-intensive MCAD, EDA,
visualization and other OpenWindows Version 3 Xlib-based
applications. Running Xlib benchmarks such as "x11perf" on a
SPARCstation 2GX results in roughly doubled raw Xlib rendering
speed for many common graphics operations, and testing with
real applications has shown up to 50% faster performance in
graphics operations.
The SBus Expansion Subsystem provides three additional SBus
slots for SPARCstation IPX, SPARCstation 2, SPARCstation 10,
and SPARCserver 630MP systems. Plus, complete support for two
424- MB drives provides the potential for increased disk
capacity.
Bring the power of the network to your PC
PC-NFS was the first product on the market to integrate the MS-
DOS(R) platform with UNIX resources. Now, PC-NFS 4.0 is the
first networking product to support both MS-Windows(R) 3.1 and
MS-DOS 5.0. This new release is complemented by the PC-NFS
Programmer's Toolkit 4.0, which is the first version that
enables developers to write TCP/IP network-based distributed
MS-Windows applications in addition to MS-DOS applications.
PC-NFS 4.0 enables DOS and Windows users to effortlessly share
information and resources with users on workstations,
minicomputers, and mainframes.
