: Have you smelled the Chicago River lately? I can't even describe the

Well, used to be, every third day on average that they had to dump raw sewage
into the river (thats average for an entire year). Now adays with the deep
tunnel, they manage to average 12 days before releasing raw sewage into the
river, so it is a bit cleaner than it was.

Lots of people think that because fish are returning that it's cleaner, but
in reality, it's because clorinated discharge is illegal now (fish really
don't like swiming in clorinated water). So there is lots of wildlife returning
to the river and it gets dumped in less often than it used to.

The cleanest place on the Chicago is near the Chicago Harbor Lock downtown
as there is no industrial discharge, and it draws in freshwater from the
Lake.
