Well, we don't have too much room to talk. We illegally redirected 300,000
cfs of Lake Michigan water for years at times to flush our sewage to St Louis.
When the locks went up Lockport, Joilet and other cities along the lower end
of the river sued because the stench was so great, they were unable to remain
in their homes in the summer. Those in that area that don't get Lake Michigan
water, are part of a pipeline project that comes out of the Kankakee basin
because we've polluted their groundwater with our toilets.
As I'm sure you had read, the case was headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Fearing a court loss, the Canal officials dynomited open the canal on New Years
Day. Once the canal was open, engineeringly speaking, the only way to really
stop it was to re-dig, grading it the other way, making it nearly impossible
to correct.
I'm sure St Louis appreciates that we send our sewage to them as thats where
thier drinking water comes from... our toilets. Remember if your ever in Alton,
they are the first city the EPA allowed to draw drinking water from the
Illinois after Chicago reversed the flow of the south branch to make our
sewage flow away from the lake.
By 2018 all drinking water will be sourced from treated effluence,
unfortunately, there won't be enough effluence to go around...
