I edited some of the comments out to shorten this note. The exchange demonstrates the fundamental problem working in the GM-UAW impasse: they hate each other. The decision-makers at GM have decided (maybe years ago) that they would be better off building cars anywhere but Flint. And an unfortunately high percentage of Flint auto workers and UAW officers regard it as their God-given right to screw the company at every opportunity. Both sides seem to regard the shut-down as preferable to serious negotiating. Both seem oblivious to the losses that are being incurred by other stake-holders: the Genesee County communities, the suppliers, the customers, and GM plants in other areas. Unfortunately, the history of this relationship is such that the visceral hatred (which is ironically the only common ground of the two sides) is well deserved by both. GM and the union both commited serious errors in strategy and tactics over the past fifty years, but both prefer to hurl insults and ultimatums instead of coming to grips with their shared problems. <statmaniac@prodigy.net> Michael wrote in message ... >> > > GM workers are among the highest paid laborers.
