Somehow that >happy-go-lucky work fast when you feel like it attitude doesn't sound like >it would play very well in any shop I ever worked in. I've been a programmer/systems analyst for many years. I used to work long and hard. I wasn't rewarded for my effort and in fact was negatively rewarded. I even spent my own time doing research on more effective ways of accomplishing our tasks and was told by management that if I wanted to work outside my assigned hours it should be on my assigned tasks (even though no overtime was paid.) It has been really harmful to my psyche to work well below my capacity and yet make it look like I've been working at capacity. The alternative has been to gain the ire of my fellow workers and greater uncompensated workload. I'm sure that a market for production would lead to lower compensation for tasks over time but it would mean greater compensation for the more productive.
