If there are no exceptions, then the poor will be taxed at an 18% rate, far in excess of what they pay today. I keep seeing people post low national sales tax rates, such as above. What is the basis for these estimates? The same amount of revenue must be raised as today, so I think the rates must be higher. Plus, many of the states have sales taxes, which won't go away, and they would have to be added onto the National rates, making the rates even higher. Many states also have income taxes, which won't go away, or if they do, their revenue loss would have to be made up (by higher sales taxes???). And, if the states keep the income tax, then all the bs about IRS invading your lives will be played out on a state level. So maybe when all is said and done, the sales tax rates will be 50%, especially if certain goods are exempted from sales tax, which they would have to be or the lower income people in the US would be screwed. Imagine paying a 50% sales tax on a $20,000 car folks!!!!! Talk about attempts to evade those taxes!!! No, a simple flat tax, with graduated rates based upon the ability to pay, administered via a system like Denmark has (where the tax return is computed by the government and mailed to the taxpayer and only if you disagree would you have to file a return - there are some exceptions) is the best way.
