AT&T Paradyne is has a new V.32bis data/fax modem out. It is called
the Dataport 14.4 Fax modem.
I thought it would be of general interest since:
- it uses the same technology as the top of the line
AT&T Paradyne (Comsphere?) modems including an optical
coupler between the telco line and modem
- from now until 5/31 it has an introductory price of $299
which is a great price for a 'new generation' V.32bis
modem from a reputable manufacturer.
- "lifetime warranty", fax software and toll-free support line
I am in no way affiliated with this company, if you want info call
AT&T Paradyne at 800.482.333

Full details >shortly. Well I have a tale less than blissful concerning this modem. I ordered mine through an advert in "Windows Direct", a series of postcards that appeared in my mailbox recently. The number they gave was 1-800 554 4996. However, when I ordered, no-one told me that the modem was on back order until May 12 (I placed my order early April), and when I called them up to ask when my modem was likely to show up, I was told they didn't know when it would be shipping, nor how long delivery would take. They gave me a number for "Customer Services", but these were obviously post-installation support people. These guys put me through to shipping, where I spoke to a Tony Poole, who was the first person to make sense in the whole deal. He did not put me on hold, he did not transfer me, he re-assured me that he would _personally_ find out what the situation was, and that he would call me back within the hour with some answers. Within the hour, I received a call from Lana in Largo (I kid ye not!) who informed me that she was personally taking my order out of the hands of the people that I had originally ordered from, and my modem would be shipping out as close to May 12 as physically possible. She also gave me a number where I could reach her if anything was bothering me about the whole deal. After talking to her, I was much reassured, and after being contacted by Dave Gary, one of their Executive Sales Managers (or some such title), I returned to the feeling that I was dealing with a competent company that was unlikely to stiff me. Nice recovery, AT&T (although if you'd given me a reduction as well, I would have been even more glowing :-)). So, let this be an example to you companies out there - sooner or later, someone you employ will drop the ball on one of your sales. However, if you make a good recovery, you won't lose that customer. (For negative examples, Best Buy could have had $1500 of my personal business in the first six months I was in the country, but through insensitive management, lazy and rude attitudes from staff, and peculiar cheque acceptance policies, I went elsewhere after getting full refunds.) Alun. ~~~~ P.S. The modem works fine, and I enjoy having a real modem instead of my 2400 baud clunker. Anyone want to buy it for $40?
