I'm a homeowner in Austin, Texas, looking for recommendations for a
reputable local or national alarm company.
I've read parts of the long-running thread in alt.security.alarms
about ADT:
http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=875811454.2326@dejanews.com
...and I'm prepared to believe the worst -- I had an unpleasant
experience with ADT myself a few years back. So is there a company out
there which does better in terms of customer service and honest sales
tactics?
Yes, I know to comparison shop -- I'm looking for ~3 companies to
call first. I just need a basic monitored system in order to get
a break on my homeowner's insurance, so cost is a factor. I'm not
interested in a DIY system.
Also, does anyone know of a good comparative article for the layperson
on how to shop for an alarm system? Consumer Reports doesn't seem to
cover this topic.
If you're a salesperson yourself, please don't call me. Also, I've
read the warnings about some dealers who lurk in alt.security.alarms
and don't need a repeat. Thanks.

If they're taking good care of you that's all that matters. BTW, Congratulations on the new addition to your family, Jim. Hope she's nice and healthy. Thanks! She's a beautiful, mellow baby, but she's having one helluva time with either reflux, pyloric stenosis, or allergy, and as a result, she's fussy as hell after eating, and tends to vomit her food up on a regular basis. We're going to the doc tomorrow. (Today's switch to a soy-based formula seems to be helping a lot, knock on wood, so I'm in hope that it's an allergy to her other formula.) jim andrews

Oh, sorry to hear she's uncomfortable. Have you tried nature's "formula?" Sometimes it's the best. Also, babies often have trouble with reflux in the first few months. If you can keep her upright during and immediately after feeding that may help somewhat. My first was colicky and nothing made him sleep through a single night for quite a while. He's a bit past that these days -- graduated from college a while back. My younger "baby" is studying engineering. Now we're starting to think about having another... :^) Regards, Robert L Bass =============================> Bass Home Electronics The Online DIY Alarm Store http://www.Bass-Home.com 2291 Pine View Circle Sarasota, FL 34231 877-722-8900 Sales & Tech Support 941-925-9747 Fax robertlbass@comcast.net =============================> "jim andrews" <jimandrews@austintexas.com> wrote in message news:MPG.17d6c20e6bec40329897bf@news-server... > In article <Cm7b9.268912$2p2.10767256@bin4.nnrp.aus1.giganews.com>, > robertlbass@comcast.net says... > > > BTW, Congratulations on the new addition to your family, Jim. However, I'm starting to think the problem may not be reflux/ps/etc., but simply overfeeding. This is because Chloe did really well this morning on the switch to soy formula, but we fed her in two 2-ounce sessions a half our or so apart. Around lunchtime, she took almost 4 ounces in one feeding, and all hell broke loose again. 4 ounces is considered "too much" for a newborn of her size, but the pediatricians in the hospital recommended we let her eat as much as she could manage. I'm thinking she may not be "managing" so well. jim andrews

Sounds about right. It's been a long time for me, though, so I don't really recall the details. One thing I did learn is that, in spite of parents' anxiety, most babies seem to keep down as much as they need. Anyway, hope she gets past it soon. I was a security supervisor here for awhile and yes stay away from ADT!
Be sure to negotiate your "false alarm" charges. The first few should be on
them, also get it in writing that on intruder alarms, the police will be sent
first instead of a security guard driving from across town.
Many times I responded to alarms having to obey all traffic regs. and taking
up to 25 minutes to get there only to call the police if it looked like it WAS
a burglary.
I repeat WAS because by then the intruder was always gone. (think
rape/kidnap)
Also, on fire alarms the fire dept. should respond immediately instead of
the alarm co. calling you to try to get an access code! You could be dead of
smoke inhalation by then.
