Some Credit and debit cards are blocked for purchases out of the your
home country.

So if leaving you home country.  Make sure you activate or get a card
that will work for the country your are going too.

In Canada
US debit cards with MasterCard or Visa symbol.
May not work at place that don't take MasterCard or Visa.

US debit card without the MasterCard or Visa system
May only work at certain ATM's.

Some US debit card may work at Canada if they have an agreement with
Interac.

I am really surprised Interac won't add Visa Electron and Maestro
This would allow most card anywhere to be used as a pin purchase
anywhere in the world.  

I do realize Interac does have some agreements with some US banks that
allow the customer to use the Card in Canada as a pin purchase.
