For instance, I asked "customer support" which of the Bay >Area cellular providers were resold under "MCI One". The answer: MCI >provides the cellular service. When I replied that such a statement was >nonsense, I got a generic "please call our customer service department >AFTER you have subscribed to the service and they will answer all of your >questions". In other words, MCI refuses to answer legitimate inquiries >concerning its service. >In the field of telecommunications, MCI has got to be the corporate >bottom-feeding leader. I dunno, I've been disappointed by 'em all: AT&T, MCI, Sprint, NJ Bell. For example: NJ Bell has a tariff waiver called the NY Connection: using "10NJB" allows folks in central New Jersey to call parts of New York across the Hudson river via New Jersey Bell (now Bell Atlantic). But what are their rates? I tried calling and didn't get a precise answer since it's distance sensitive, despite my telling them the originating and destination phone numbers. And stranger: their rates change from evening to night at 11PM whereas AT&T's changed at 10PM (maybe different now) so they're NOT the clear winner! MCI: aren't they being sued for the "Fridays free" plan that they allowed for individuals (despite being intended for businesses only)? They retroactively billed customers for calls to India and other high use countries DESPITE the printed offer clearly saying such calls were covered in the plan! [I refer to the TELECOM archives for those who want to follow up] I never forgave Sprint for their failure to disclose the details of some of their promotions. Long ago I got a Sprint "FoN" card via their Wd-50 offer where there was supposed to be an hour free. First bill: no credit. I called and was told that the free hour was applied to my THIRD bill and I get no bill unless there is activity (so I cannot just wait 3 months for the free hour). Gee, where was that in writing in the offer or when I got the card? Third bill: no credit. I called and got the credit thay "forgot". How can I trust such a billing system? Then they charged me a "non recurring charge" about 4 times which was never supposed to apply to the account in the first place! All that aggravation on a lightly used calling card? (which is why I caught the errors so fast) Not wanting to risk my credit rating and collection agencies, I paid my bills in full and got credits later. Slowly I used most of the $40 credit, but I let the account go idle. Then one day I get a notice that Sprint made an "adjustment" to my account and helped themselves to my $10 balance! I replied that I didn't approve of that and they THEN send me a refund check! Even AT&T's guilty of never "putting it in writing". I'm an AT&T customer and even I call their plans "true Nonsense" since it's just a hodgepodge of minimal discounts on things, similar to the credit card's bogus dollars. I remember AT&T's botched "I-plan" which was nothing more than a marketing attempt to have a unified front for their mess of different calling plans. As Firesign Theatre said "we're all bozos on this bus". -- Jeffrey Jonas jeffj@panix.com
