Gee, when I rented a Hertz Car in Paris in 1988 (a bottom-of-the-line
Spanish 3-cylinder job), everything went very smoothly, although we
wondered how we'd be able to coax it over the Alps. When it got
broken into in Milan they cheerfully exchanged it for an Escort, and
gave us one with Swiss plates so we could drop it in Zurich instead
of having to drive back to Paris (we wanted to take the train), all at
no extra charge. The hardest part was trying to explain to the police
in Milan that nothing had been stolen (there wasn't anything inside)
but we had to have the report form to satisfy the insurance, and
then having to fill out 5 separate copies because they had neither
a copier nor carbon paper handy. I suppose Hertz service may well
have gone down the tubes since then, but I had a very good experience.
