Next time you are shopping and not in a hurry, take a look at the code
numbers on the cans, including the syntax of the numbers, for several
brands. Also look at the style of the cans themselves. Now, go do the
same thing in the cat food aisle. It's scary. Among the cheaper brands,
at least, it all seems to come out of the same half-dozen processing
houses (factory ships?) Above a certain quality grade, per the computer
or human inspectors whim, they call it human food- below, it gets a cat
food label.

No, I don't have any cites to back it up, just my own observations. I
suspect, like most categories of stuff for sale, the majority is made by
only a few companies, and sold thru many brands. Back when I was eating
lower on the economic food chain as a struggling student, I had more
time than money, and often was able to find generics that seemed to be
out of the same factory as the name brands, at half the price. Tuna,
canned veggies, fruit juices, etc. I never could bring myself to eat cat
food, tho, no matter if the cans and numbers were the same as the ones
labeled tuna.
