And at the other extreme, you've got to keep your receipt for
everything you carry or have in your home.

IMNSHO a customer in early January (that is, soon after lots
of people have received gifts) at the return line (not elsewhere
in the store) with an item openly carried (no attempt to deceive)
without an extraordinary value-to-volume ratio, not known to
the store (he's not making a living off this) and asking for
an exchange (as he said, if he's stealing, why not steal the
one he wants; if he's fencing, what does it matter?) ought to
be taken at his word and given a store credit.

This past summer I bought an $18 watch at WalMart. It quickly
broke and I returned it with the receipt. When I was done,
the clerk returned my receipt to me, but had forgotten to
mark the receipt for the return. I replaced the watch with the
same model. After a while it also malfunctioned. I brought it
back, but I had inadvertantly brought the earlier receipt. When
the on-duty clerk attempted to run the return the system noted
that that item off that receipt had already been returned, and
she couldn't process the credit. So at that point I had merchandise
with its packaging and no valid receipt. Since I was at the
jewelry counter I was well into the store. Granted, I did have
a pink sticker, but I could have gotten that from presenting anything
to the greeter. But they gave me back the squirrely watch, so that
I could bring the correct receipt to return it the next time.
