Somewhat divergent here - not exactly suitable for a 5 yr old, but my
first PC was a National semi. SC/MP evaluation kit. I learnt more from
running that (and building a keyboard, video card, serial interface,
tape i/f, sound card from scratch) than a year of Comp Sci at University.
I've learnt more in 6 months from running a $40 Linux system than from
10 years of using CP/M, DOS and Windows. Of course, that assumes one wants
to learn about computers rather than just use them to get something done.

I'd like something with the reliability and security of Unix, knowing that
my kids couldn't trash the system without root access, and the ease-of-use
for inexperienced users of Windows or Mac. Maybe one of the new Silicon
Graphics O2s ... If only the Windows emulators worked better ...
