Not "urban legend". It's what was reported earlier,
and not all of it has been disavowed. From the page
you link:
The New York Times reported in its Monday issue that
the throats of the two soldiers had been slashed,
quoting the same military official.
That the military official is now revising his story
doesn't make the previous version "urban legend"; it
just makes it wrong. The official stands by the claim
that the bodies were looted of the soldiers' personal
belongings.
One might question how the first version was released,
BY THE MILITARY OFFICIAL, in the first place. However,
it wouldn't appear to be in order to stir up anger in
the readership, as the story makes clear that the last
time American soldiers' bodies were mutilated, it led
to the withdrawal of our troops.
