Rush Limbaugh in pill probe
By TRACY CONNOR
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Talk-radio titan Rush Limbaugh is being investigated for allegedly
buying thousands of addictive painkillers from a black-market drug
ring.

The moralizing motormouth was turned in by his former housekeeper -
who says she was Limbaugh's pill supplier for four years.

Wilma Cline, 42, says Limbaugh was hooked on the potent prescription
drugs OxyContin, Lorcet and hydrocodone - and went through detox
twice.

"There were times when I worried," Cline told the National Enquirer,
which broke the story in an edition being published today. "All these
pills are enough to kill an elephant - never mind a man."

Cline could not be reached for further comment yesterday, but her
lawyer, Ed Shohat of Miami, said his client "stands behind the story."

The Daily News independently confirmed that Limbaugh is under
investigation.

His lawyers, Jerry Fox and Dan Zachary, refused to comment on the
accusations and said any "medical information" about him was private
and not newsworthy.

They said Limbaugh - who has a top-rated syndicated radio show but
resigned early today from a weekly ESPN football segment amid
criticism of racial comments about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback
Donovan McNabb - was traveling and had no comment.

The Palm Beach County state attorney's office, which is running the
probe, said it could not confirm or deny the allegations.

Scoring in parking lot

Cline told the Enquirer she went to prosecutors with information about
Limbaugh and others after four years of drug deals that included
clandestine handoffs in a Denny's parking lot.

She said she wore a wire during her last two deliveries to the
conservative commentator and gave the tapes to authorities.

She also gave the Enquirer a ledger documenting how many pills she
claimed to have bought for him - 4,350 in one 47-day period - and
E-mails she claimed Limbaugh sent her.

In one missive, Limbaugh pushed Cline to get more "little blues" -
code for OxyContin, the powerful narcotic nicknamed hillbilly heroin,
she said.

"You know how this stuff works ... the more you get used to, the more
it takes," the May 2002 E-mail reads. "But I will try and cut down to
help out."

The account Cline gave the Enquirer is that she became Limbaugh's drug
connection in 1998, nine months after taking a housekeeping job at his
Palm Beach mansion.

It started after her husband, David, hurt himself in a fall, and
Limbaugh asked how he was.

"He asked me casually, 'Is he getting any pain medication?' I said,
'Yes - he's had surgery, and the doctor gave him hydro-codone 750,'"
Cline said. "To my astonishment, he said, 'Can you spare a couple of
them?'"

Husband's pills

Cline said she gave Limbaugh 10 pills the next day and agreed to give
him 30 of her husband's pills each month. When the doctor stopped
renewing the prescription in early 1999, Limbaugh allegedly went
ballistic.

"His tone was nasty and bullying. He said, 'I don't care how or what
you do, but you'd better - better! - get me some more,'" Cline said.

The housekeeper said she found a new supplier and arranged to hide
Limbaugh's stashes under his mattress so his wife, Marta, wouldn't
find them.

After several months, Limbaugh told her he was going to New York for
detox and didn't need any more pills, Cline said.

But a month later, he said his left ear was hurting and asked her for
hydrocodone, followed by an order for OxyContin.

Limbaugh, 52, suffered from autoimmune ear disease, a condition that
left him deaf and had to be corrected with cochlear implant surgery
two years ago.

Cline said she continued to make deliveries to Limbaugh even after she
quit as his housekeeper in July 2001 - but he became increasingly
paranoid, even patting her down for recording devices, she said.

In June 2002, Limbaugh told her he was going to New York for detox a
second time.

After he returned, "I went to talk to him, and he cried a little bit,"
she said. "He told me that if it ever got out, he would be ruined."

She claimed that a lawyer for Limbaugh gave her a payoff - $80,000 he
owed her, plus another $120,000 - and asked her to destroy the
computer that contained the E-mail records.

Soon after, Cline and her husband retained Shohat and contacted
prosecutors.

----------------------------

Feeling no pain

The drugs Rush Limbaugh is accused of abusing are legal only with a
doctor's prescription. All are habit-forming.

Hydrocodone
Anti-cough agent and painkiller similar to morphine. Side effects
include anxiety, poor mental performance, emotional dependence,
drowsiness, mood changes, difficulty breathing and itchiness.

Lorcet
Brand name for the combination of Tylenol and hydrocodone, prescribed
for moderate to severe pain. Side effects include dry mouth, nausea,
vomiting, decreased appetite, dizziness, tiredness, muscle twitches,
sweating and itching.

OxyContin
Potent time-release medication for relief of moderate to severe pain,
known as hillbilly heroin because of black-market popularity in some
rural areas. Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, sweating,
muscle twitches and decreased sex drive. A large dose can be fatal.

You're mistaken there, EJ. Rush only appeals to a small smegment of
society who already has their minds made up already. Rush is a symptom
of Repugnicanism, not a force behind it.

a good dumbass meter repair shop?

I think the most important thing he said was this comment:

""There may be more than you want to know about this, you can believe
and trust me on that."

I doubt he'll be hauled away in flexcuffs but when the smoke clears I
believe he'll have been taken down several pegs.

If his ratings take a hit and if his megamillion $ contract he
recently signed contains a morals clause, he may be on thin ice
indeed.

You'll know he's in serious trouble when he quits dropping names like
his good buddy "Mr. Justice Clarence Thomas" who I bet probably will
stop taking his calls very soon.

This is what happens when you get a little too big for your britches.

I would be surprised if you wrote anything
vaguely intelligent or humorous.
Keep plucking away, kornholer, even the

I'd be surprised if you wrote something vaguely intelligent.

Does your dialog consist entirely of cliched insults?

How original, kornholer.
Did you make that up?

You like them enough to use them, eh, kornholer.

You know this from first hand, personal experience? I caveated my
statement with "perhaps", you are attempting to state a fact for which
you have no empirical support. Big difference.

It is interesting how the tide has turned in this group. Two years ago
there were perhaps two or three people who were willing to take a stance
against the right wing but these days the numbers appear much greater. I
wonder what happened along the way?

Actually it probably happened the other way around. From some of the
things I have read, the condition that caused his deafness were also
associated with a fair amount of persistent pain.

I am about to do a very rare thing though. I am going to raise a
question of doubt on this issue. This guy is a millionaire - if he
wanted the pills bad enough I would think he would have the resources to
convince some doctor to write a script for whatever he wanted. Even
"ethical" doctors can be bought for a price. That being the case, why
would he resort to the illegal drug market? Is there something I'm
missing here?

You may have something there.
You and your fellow kornholers bring nothing to the table.
Keep plucking away though.
It keeps you off the NAMBLA sites for a little bit.

If he had "surrendered, " which would mean turning himself in. This would be
all over the news if it had taken place.

And as Dr. Proctor has said, lack of evidence is evidence in itself.

We are tired of war. The Patriot act and the Victory act and John Ashcroft
arresting paraplegics at gun point in California.

Yes, there is critical information missing.

Wrong use of the word surrendered. Context is everything. The topic of
the "war on drugs" was raised. The one in which the battle is around
drug use. In that war there are people who resist the temptation to
become a victim of the war and then there are those who just surrender
and join the millions of drug abusers. That was the "surrendered" I
spoke of. It is only by coincidence that the word "surrendered" also
applies to a person turning themselves in when accused of a crime. It
was a terse attempt at oblique humor. So oblique that the intent was
misunderstood. I'll take half the blame for the misunderstanding if you
will do the same.

"Get it"? That's just it. The conservatives don't "get it" that the
right wing path is one of isolation, belligerence, dissolution of civil
rights, funding of wars rather than funding of education, large
government, police state tactics and high unemployment. Neither side
really knows how to compromise any more to come up with a reasonable way
of serving the populace and both sides shroud everything in secrecy lest
their smoke-filled-room sessions become common knowledge or their
operatives are ham-strung by concepts such as honor and integrity.

If Limbaugh had any integrity and honor, he would simply come out and
say that he screwed up or show that there is no substance to the charge.
Even if it can be demonstrated that he knew Cline was dealing is drugs
and did not turn her in, he is guilty of racketeering even if he never
bought a single pill himself.

Oh but the sweet beauty is that this gives him a whole new topic to talk
about and hopefully he'll get so involved in it that he won't have time
for liberal bashing. Even Kim Peterson said something on Friday to the
effect that he was glad not to be in Rush's shoes and Peterson is one of
the more mild ones and has at least a bit of decorum.

I won't accept your tortured definition of surrendered, as it means that you
believe you are better than other, "weaker," people because you have not
"surrendered."

The whole context of surrender in the discussion is about Rush telling the
truth (which I believe won't show drug abuse).

I bet you think Hitlery is a moderate, eh, kornholer?

I don't accept your tortured definition of "surrender",
either. In fact, it's nonsense. The "war on drugs" is
not being waged primarily against drug users, although
plenty of the are victims of the misguided, expensive,
ineffectual pseudo-"war". The war is being waged
primarily against drug producers, distributors and
retailers, i.e., against the supply chain.

The intent of the foolish "war on drugs" is to stop the
distribution and consumption of "illicit" drugs. In
that context, a surrender can mean one of two things:
a) a supplier stops supplying; b) a user stops using.
The tortured meaning you gave is exactly the opposite
of b), and is a nonsense meaning.

The involvement of the fascist loudmouth Limbaugh in
illegal drugs is just another example of the hypocrisy
of finger-wagging extremists. That there's something
to this is beyond doubt, based on the fascist swine's
statement to the "folks" about there being more to this
than they'll want to know.

The fat pompous windbag Limbaugh *loves* to be the
center of speculation, and he also *loves* to pretend
to have all kinds of juicy insider information that he
"can't" share with the "folks", but I can't believe
he'd say a thing like that when he has nothing at all.
Recall that someone else has said (whined, if I
remember correctly) that the announcement of Limbaugh's
involvement in this was revealed publicly before
telling Limbaugh himself (and his attorneys). It's
anyone's guess what he knew by the time he made that
comment, but he at least knew there's something to the
investigation.

More from the lefty bag of lies.
None of that is true.
Try to prove it, kornholer. You can't.
Are you really that stupid, Messy Pooper?

Yes.

You mind is already made up, Messy Pooper.
Not that it means anything.
I'm sure you won't let facts get I the way of your hatred.

Interestingly, this is exactly what chief justice Rhenquist
did under very similar circumstances. He just announced that he had
developed a little "habit" under medical treament and was dealing with
it. End of story... Most people don't even know about this curious
episode of the chief justice as drug addict...

"WHEN SUPREME COURT JUSTICES REFUSE TO RETIRE:".... JOHN DEAN

http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/20010720.html

"Justices' mental problems are all too easily hidden. While on the
bench, Justice Frank Murphy, who served from 1940-49, had a serious
drug problem (Demerol addiction), and was seeing a psychoanalyst. One
biographer reports that at one point, he was illegally purchasing
drugs twice a day. Law clerks, and other justices, were deciding his
votes. No one outside the Court knew. "

"Long before Associate Justice William Rehnquist was nominated to be
chief justice, he had a serious health issue that may have impaired
his decisionmaking. For nine years, from 1972-81, the Capitol
physician, Freeman H. Cary, had prescribed a powerful hypnotic
medication, Placidyl, because of Rehnquist's chronic lower back pain.

This powerful controlled substance is prescribed for relief from
insomnia. Its known side effects include "confused thinking, impaired
memory," and even "delirium." Rehnquist started at 500 milligrams a
day, but the dose soon tripled, to 1500 milligrams a day.

Ignoring Rehnquist's Prescription Drug Use

By 1981, journalists covering the Supreme Court did notice that the
highly articulate Rehnquist was having increasing difficulty asking
questions from the bench. Reporters who engaged in private
conversations with Rehnquist noted that he clearly had "significant
difficulty talking." But none wrote about it.

It was not until Justice Rehnquist ended up in the hospital in January
1982, and it was learned that the Justice had been "seeing things and
hearing things that other people didn't see or hear," did reporters
say anything.

Even when he was elevated to chief justice, Rehnquist's health records
remained sealed during his confirmation hearings. More than this, the
Senate Judiciary Committee agreed in advance not to ask him any
questions about his health. He did testify about the cloak of secrecy
regarding the health of justices, but not about his own condition.

"I think judges have much more of a tendency to 'pull the wagons
around' or something like that particularly on our Court, where
there are only nine seats, the health of every individual Justice is
an endless subject of speculation," Rehnquist told the Senate. As
chief justice he has continued to keep his, and the other justices',
health well hidden. We can only assume that Rehnquist is in better
mental health than at the time of his 1982 hospitalization. "

Liberals need powerful drugs to combat
their multitudinous psychological disorders.

Rehnquist record says he's what they
call 'a functioning psychopath'.
