The Carnatic music tradition is an ancient one, claiming a
continuity with over 2000 years of Indian history. Associated
with southern India, it is a style with rich intellectual and
aesthetic foundations that can also be appreciated on many levels
by the professional, the amateur, the student, and the completely
uninitiated. While in Carnatic music the human voice is considered
to be the defining instrument, it has a rich instrumental tradition
as well. The violin, an instrument familiar to western audiences,
was easily adopted into the Carnatic tradition over 200 years ago
and now has evolved its own distinctively Indian style of playing:
played while seated on the stage with the scroll resting on the
player's foot. Come and hear these great artists perform in this
rich tradition.

The Artists:
Sri. Nagaraj and Sri. Manjunath are the sons and disciples of the
well-known violinist Sri. S. Mahadevappo of Mysore. Sri. Nagaraj
gave his concert at the age of 11 and Sri. Manjunath at the age of
9. Following their debut, their ascent was meteoric. This
talented duo have been giving violin concerts all over the world.
These duets have won widespread approbation and have come to stay
as they represent the best of traditional classicism combined with
exciting innovation.
Sri. Bakthavathsalam received his training from his maternal uncle
Sri. Tiruvarur Krishnamurthy, a noted Mridanga vidwan of AIR,
Pondicherry. Having started performing at the age of 9, Sri.
Bakthavathsalam has accompanied all the top ranking artists in
India and abroad. He has received several titles including
"Kalaimamni" from Tamil Nadu Government and "Mridanga Vadhya Mani"
from Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
