Background:
One of the greatest popular singers from the "Golden Age of Indian
Cinema" is the legendary Manna Dey. For over five decades now, Manna
Dey has regaled Indian film aficionados with his rhythmic songs that
refuse to age with time. He stands apart from the crowd because of
his deep voice and a wide repertoire: from qawwali, to light romantic
duets, to classical numbers. He is the recipient of India's prestigious
title of "Padma Shree" among numerous other awards.
Now, in what may be his final world tour, Manna Dey is coming to the
Boston area along with his accomplished live musicians. He is
accompanied by Richard Mitra, Indranath Mukherjee, Tabla player Debu
Chowdhury, vocalist Rashida Khan Banu, and dancer Salina Ahmed Jharna.
This event will feature both Hindi and Bengali songs and dance, and
most of the proceeds will be donated to the Kisholoy Bangla School of
Cambridge - a non-profit organization working to pass the rich language
and cultural heritage of Bengal on to the next generation by working
with a Cambridge public school after hours.
