ARTIST DETAILS:
Manilal Nag, sitarist from Calcutta, is a highly respected player
of the Vishnupur tradition, having studied with his father, Gopal Nag
(who
was one of Ravi Shankar's early teachers). Manilal Nag is highly
respected
for his full and chaste rendition of the ragas coupled with his sweet
sound. He has many awards and recordings to his credit, and has toured
the
West extensively, although this is his first visit to Boston in many
years.
Subhen Chatterjee, tabla, is a also from Calcutta, and his accompanied
most of India's major artists in concert and recording. He is also
well-known in the West from his many tours.
A special feature of this concert is the shahnai peformance of
Ali
Ahmad Hussain Khan, a senior student of the great Bismillah Khan, and a
repected artist in his own right. It has been a long time since shahnai
has been heard in Boston, and the artistry of this man, accompanied by
his
son, is much anticipated.
