Well there is nothing wrong with acknowledging this country's history and
origins.
I think we have all studies Canadian history. As I recall it begins with the
Discovery of North America.
Why basically up until 1776 there is little difference between Canadian
history and American History.
Not only is Canada's history common with America's history, ad the History
of the Americas, but it also has a common history with most European
nations, most significantly with England and France.

So there are famous "Canadians", who were not Canadian at all, but very
significant in Canadain history. Such as a Cabot or a Champlain, a Lord
Simcoe, and the like. And if someone was born elsewhere but is a Canadian
citizen, such as a Donovan Bailey, or Ben Johnston, or Mats Sundin, or a
Vince Carter, you deny people voting for their Canadian icons, even if they
ain't Canadian.
It's not unreasonable or outlandish. Especially when you can nominate your
neighbour!
