:Katy,

:Why do you feel you MUST figure out something "as quickly as possible"??
:When you rush:

:1) You add stress
:2) You miss other qualities the person might have.

SNIPPED for brevity

I don't RUSH to get into or out of any interaction. I'm talking about when
you meet strangers at random. If I get as far as a first date with
someone, I expect that we're both listening to one another pretty
carefully.
I think women (and probably men) have to learn pretty early on what kind
of signs to look for in a person. I'm not just talking about potential
mates - how about job interviews and applicants for roommates? It is niave
and dangerous to just assume that every person I meet is OK and go out
with them or interact with them at length...MOST people are just fine, but
I've gotten pretty good at picking up little signals that say "This person
is not right in the head."
As for the signs of material status that I was talking about earlier,
those things have little to do with "weeding out" the loonies or
assholes...those are the kinds of things we might find out on a first date
and I think it's OK for a woman to be impressed that a man makes a good
living and is responsible. If a man makes little money, but has a lot
going for him in terms of intelligence/creativity and personality, then of
course I can still find him attractive, but right now I'm interested in
men who take life as seriously as I do - owning a car and living in a
decent place can be indicators of being a stable, mature adult.
