Our system administrator has left for a new job, so,
I had to take over the system admin. I do not have any news
admin experience. I am trying to learn and speed up on the subject.
One of our system is the server for network news.

I got two mail from someone recently and not sure about what to do:

Rafique,

Please change your files to reflect
the change of the machine utkcs2.cs.utk.edu to
kumquat.cs.utk.edu. This will eventually
change to cs.utk.ed; but I'll let you
know when this happens.

Thank you,

Subject: KUMQUAT.CS.UTK.EDU going down for O/S upgrade
Date: Thu, 10 Dec 92 13:38:50 EST
Status: R

Our news server, kumquat.cs.utk.edu, will be going down
shortly for an O/S upgrade. We hope to restore NNTP
service on this machine by 8-9pm tonight.

Also, this Sunday starting around noon, kumquat will
be getting a facelift, becoming cs.utk.edu. "cs.utk.edu"
will also be our new site name, a change from "utkcs2".
So, please be ready to change your sys/newsfeeds file
to speak NNTP to cs.utk.edu instead of kumquat.cs.utk.edu.
More on this later.

I hope this is the last big News shake-up you hear
about from our site. Thanks for your patience.

I am not sure what are the files I need to edit. I read the man pages
whatever seemed to be related but not clear.

I went to /share/news directory and searched the files for the name 'utkcs2'
and found the following files:

nntp_access:utkcs2.cs.utk.edu xfer no
nntp_access.throttle:utkcs2.cs.utk.edu xfer no
nntp_feeds:utkcs2/utkcs2.cs.utk.edu dnet.*, eunet.*, sub.*
nntpsend.csh:##foreach host ( elroy decwrl umich uakari rpi infonode utkcs2 emory viking) # JM910702
nntpsend.hostpath:utkcs2 utkcs2.cs.utk.edu
nntpsend.hosts:elroy decwrl destroyer saimiri rpi infonode utkcs2 emory ctrsolsys:utkcs2/utkcs2.cs.utk.edu:athena,alt,aus,can,de,eunet,fnet,ieee,nasa.public-announce,tn,uk/all,!msfc,!local:F:/share/news/spool/out.going/utkcs2

I am thinking to change the name on all 6 files from
utkcs2.cs.utk.edu to cs.utk.edu

But what else I will have to do?
do I have to do the make or anything?
Can I do this name change centrally by one command or program?
if you see nntp_feeds file, do I put cs/cs.utk.edu ?

My final questions to you, how can I speed up the newsadmin? Can I
buy any book or any other suggesion ?

I appreciate your help very much on this. please email the answer.

Thanks,
Rafique
