Studies have been done in several states that indicate that accidents
and resulting injuries/deaths have gone down with the raising of a 55
limit to 65. If the police actually enforce a reasonable limit, the
roads will be safer. In nearly every county in NJ, where police
have supposedly cracked down on aggressive driving, the numbers
apparently showed a drop in accidents, injuries and fatalities. But
the limit they seem to be enforcing is equivalent to a 65 mph limit,
with leeway to 74.

I set my cruise to 71/72 on the GSP, Rte. 18, I-287 and the NJT, and
has been doing so for several years. I can only speak for myself. I
drive where I feel comfortable for the prevailing conditions. It has
nothing at all to do with the legal speed limit. I've been driving
past radar traps for years, without getting pulled. I have to assume
the cops are enforcing a limit higher than 75. That, to me, is
reasonable.

Frankly, drivers who are unwilling to keep their low end speed on
highways at between 60 and 65, and stay in the right lane while doing
so, have no business or right being on the highways.
