Schools have no >ethics, or manners. I don't believe you are correct on this one jmi. Socialization is an integral byproduct of the schooling experience. That's why children who are home schooled (and this is my understanding, not gospel) have a more difficult time adjusting to university life. Manners and ethics does begin at home without a doubt but school is the place to put those lessons to practical use in a relatively safe environment. I can read all about making a stuffed-tender loin of beef as much as I want. I can talk it over with my mom till I'm blue in the face but it doesn't mean I can just step up to the butchers block one day and just do it. Tying this into the uniform question, wouldn't it be better for students to be forced to deal with each other on field where such surface values, such as appearance are kept to a minimum? >As an example. A man is in the store he has 14 items, he has his son with >him (abou 5 yrs old) and enters a 10 items or less line. When it is >pointed out to him that he has more than 10 items, he states "I'm in a >rush." How about this one: Parents tell child(ren) that law and order are the cornerstones of our civilization and that they must be defended . Then ATF comes to the door to execute a valid and legal warrant. Mommy and Daddy tell the children that it's ok to rebuke the law with violent means when you don't like it, or if the law/courts don't pass muster with your personal ethics. Firefight insues and people die. Now THERE is "situational ethics" >Socialization skills are not what public schools are supposed to be >teaching our kids. They should be teaching our kids how to read (and they >aren't), how to write (again, they are failing there) and how to do basic >math (you don't want to see what math and science scores look like in >terms of what they were just 20 years ago). Aren't the schools also supposed to teach "how to think" ? Being able to take just about any problem and work rationally thru to a logical end or at least as close as one can get with the information on hand? Math and science are fundamental I agree. I seems that I can't hire anyone under the age of 23 anymore without yelling at them the first few nights in the kitchen "Where were you in hs biology?" "where were you in chemistry? " But philosophy, history, the arts all combine (or are supposed to) into a well rounded individual. Think to yourself about the 6 questions a reporter needs to answer in a story (Who, what when ect) How many are answered with the catacism of science, and how many with the thought processes of the humanities? > >School boards and elections on what is acceptable to "wear" in school. >Next we will see you pushing for the "moment of silent prayer" because the >majority feel that that is acceptable and the norm too... screw those that >don't believe in prayer. <flipping thru the Constitution> hmmmm........... can't seem to find anything in here directed at "Freedom of apparel" but BOY! Look at this big one here about separation of church and state.. >The only purpose of the "system" we have is to protect the rights of the >20% that aren't in the majority from the majority. Funny, I'm not a christian, so I'm part of that 20% and I don't exactly feel like my rights are protected with a BA police officer pulls me over and ransacks my car, strictly on the basis of my bumpersticker and then thwaps me in the chest with his night stick for "sass'n " him.
