Let's start off with IMHO. That means don't reply to this post with your
own opinion. Reply to the original post.
You are chosing say between C++ Builder, Delphi, Visual C++ and Visual
Basic. I wanted to get the product names clear.
Your needs are time to develop, database-support, client-server,
value-for-money, and support.

Time to develop
Clear Delphi (first) and C++ Builder (a close second) are the faster
database development tools on the market. They both use the VCL database
classes and that is why. VB also provides RAD (rapid application
development), but not as rapid for database development as VCL based
products. VC++ lags far back in last place when RAD is the goal.

Database-Support
Delphi and C++ Builder again beat out Microsoft's product offerings. The
VCL database classes and Database Explorer are the reasons why.

Client-Server
VC++ is the leader here, although C++ Builder 3.0 is a close second. This
is simply the power of C++. It is very difficult to manage threads and
processes in Delphi and VB and managing threads and processes is very
important for C/S projects. Also ATL, available both in C++ Builder and
VC++ is a great way of creating powerful C/S components.

Value-for-money
What? All these products are cheap as hell. A developer in any of these
tools costs more in one week, than the cost of any of these tools.

Support
VC++ wins hands down. There is more support available at
support.microsoft.com and through MSDN and other channels, than all three
other products combined. VB would place second. C++ Builder would lose to
VB by a small margin and Delphi would come in dead last with no hope.
Borland's support for Delphi is simply unacceptable.

You may want to consider C++ Builder if you want one tool that does
everything.

By the way, I work for the competition (RPM ex-Footprint ex-IBM). They use
Foxpro, VC++ and VB. I hate Foxpro and VB. I love C++ Builder.
